If I need a gloss/matt/textured finish, can this be done?
Textured finishes can be achieved either through the use of paint or through the application of a film that carries the pattern. A simple fine spark finish can be sometimes be created by lightly blasting the surface. This process is used to reproduce mould tool textures, typically in automotive applications.
Whilst paint may sound extremely limited when it comes to creating textures, in the right hands, the results can be stunning. Very fine finishes can be produced purely with a spraying technique. Courser finishes are produced by using textured paint. Matt through to high gloss finishes can be achieved by careful paint selection, polishing and sometimes lacquering.
There are a variety of different types of paint including acrylic (typically used in aerosol), two pack (where the paint and a hardener are mixed in controlled proportion), water based (the environmentally friendly way to go), or ‘good old’ cellulose (getting harder to source these days).
In all cases the results are determined by the quality of the substrate and the skill of the model maker. It is not worth skimping on either!
…. And as an afterthought, please allow a timescale to let a painted finish dry fully. Many a beautiful finish has been spoilt by packing and shipping too quickly after completion!
